Foam concrete is either a cement paste or mortar, classified as lightweight concrete, in which air-voids are entrapped in mortar by suitable foaming agent. It possesses high flow-ability, low weight, minimal consumption of aggregate, controlled low strength and excellent thermal insulation properties. By proper control in dosage of foam, a wide range of densities (1600– 400 kg/m3). Foamed concrete is a material with a lot of practical aspects, a low weight and good thermal conductibility. Due to these good properties, the foamed concrete has been used so far mainly as a filling material. The applications in which the foamed concrete would be used as a load bearing material, are until now scarce. The reason for that are the fairly low strength parameters.

By varying the method of foamed concrete production, the gradation of the fine aggregate samples, method of curing and the type of foaming agents used, conclusions were drawn on how to best achieve a lightweight foamed concrete with a high strength that still falls under the range of acceptable lightweight concrete strengths.

Foamed Concrete Properties at Elevated Temperatures: Potential Applications
Foamed concrete is cementatious material integrated with mechanically entrained foam in the mortar slurry which can produce a variety of densities ranging from 400 to 1600 kg/m3. The application of foamed concrete has been primarily as a filler material in civil engineering works. This work explores the potential of using foamed concrete in building construction, as non-load-bearing partitions of lightweight load-bearing structural members. Experimental and analytical studies has been undertaken to develop quantification models to obtain thermal and mechanical properties of foamed concrete at ambient and elevated temperatures. Although foamed concrete mechanical properties are low in comparison to normal weight concrete, foamed concrete may be used as partition or light load-bearing walls in a low rise residential construction. The results of a preliminary feasibility study indicate that foamed concrete can achieve very good thermal insulation performance for fire resistance.

This study might help to assist the Industrial Building System in Malaysia and other third world in finding a new method in construction. This method provides many advantages in the construction industry such as, speed in construction, cost effective and environmental friendly. The idea is to use foam concrete with three different densities for the different components of the house. A density of 1250 Kg/m3 for the columns (as stud) , 1400 Kg/m3 for the slab and 1600 Kg/m3 for the beams. Beams, columns and the waffle slab will be designed to replace the conventional frame by using the stud theory method. This study reached a conclusion that the newly designed house has many benefits for the occupants and to the environment furthermore it is cost- effective than a conventionally built house by 17.2%.
